OUR TRAINING

 

At the Ryes we place a high value on developing the skill set and knowledge base of our staff so that

they can respond to the variety of needs of the young people who come into our service. 


We believe in training and developing our staff to equip them with the knowledge and skills to work with young people in complex situations.

As well as our core mandatory training, we also offer workshops to explore different conditions that affect behaviour and to think about how we should respond for positive outcomes.  These workshops include understanding Autistic Spectrum, Attachment and Trauma.  We also have a wide network of resources to access any further training which we feel may enhance our own continuing professional development programme. 

 

All our care staff are automatically enrolled onto their Level 3 diploma Health and Social Care for Children and Young People once they have passed probation. We also currently have members of our education team accessing formal qualifications through our local college to consolidate their knowledge and increase their confidence to engage and inspire our young people.

 

These are some of the workshops we run regularly ...

Understanding Core Attachment

 

Explores how children form attachments, how internal working models shape the external world .  Looks at how insecure attachments impact on behaviour and how we can work with children with poor attachment.

Secure Base Model
 

Introduces attachment-based parenting model as devised by Gillian Schofield & Mary Beek – looks at the five elements of the Secure Base star – Availability, Sensitivity, Acceptance, Co-Operation, Family Membership

Understanding Brain Development and the Impact of Trauma

 

With aid of DVD, look at how the child’s brain develops from birth and forms pathways based on social interaction and external experiences.  Develops an understanding of how trauma can impact on that development, how it impacts on a young person’s ability to cope with the outside world and how staff can affect change

Understanding and Working with Sexually Harmful Behaviour

 

Session explores when Sexualised Behaviour becomes a concern and goes beyond healthy sexual development.  Identifies (in conjunction with previous trauma training) why some of our young people display this behaviour.  Looks at how behaviour cycles can lead to high risk behaviours, helps us understand the Dysfunctional Cycle and how our young people may present throughout this cycle.  Identifies strategies to help staff be able to support young people proactively and with empathy.  Identifies strategies for young people to be able to recognise their own behaviours and break the abusive cycle.

+ProActive Approaches is an ‘attachment & trauma informed’, behaviour support system for SEMH and Autism services. The philosophy behind +ProActive Approaches is one of understanding, empathy and is built upon adopting a proactive, child-centred mindset in relation to behaviours of concern.

+ProActive Approaches draws heavily on contemporary research, PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) principles and direct practice experience. It allows staff to understand and respond confidently to behaviour that might challenge, using a wide range of proactive strategies and techniques.

By empowering staff members with the essential knowledge, they become inquisitive about behaviour and equipped with the skills to analyse and identify potential causes, considering possibilities ranging from, trauma & attachment, sensory, communication difficulties, frustration, anxiety or environmental factors. This important analysis not only allows staff to correctly recognise and understand behaviours but subsequently develop an appropriate support plan which lessens the likelihood of behaviour reoccurring. It also aims to minimise the potential for empathy fatigue and blocked care.

Legal Framework of Childcare

To familiarize staff with the framework of children’s legislation and how this informs daily practice with our young people.  This training gives staff the opportunity to feel familiar with current standards and regulations and to know where to access certain information.  The session also explains the inspection framework so that staff have a better understanding of how their input feeds into positive outcomes for the young people and the homes as a whole.

Understanding ASD Behaviours

Introduction of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, how autism is assessed, making sense of behaviours and gaining an insight into the difficulties from a communication, social interactions and understandings, sensory and imagination perspective.  An exploration of functions of behaviour (why they do what they do). Recognising patterns of behaviour through ABC charting and developing ways to support through Secure Base and Positive Behaviour Support.
