Qualifications and Accreditation
Wherever possible we strive to ensure young people attending the Ryes College leave with some accreditation. We use exam boards such as AQA and OCR. Young People can achieve the following qualifications:
These are presently offered in English Language, Maths, Science and Business Studies through the AQA website.
Functional Skills/ Entry Level Certificates
Students can achieve Functional Skills Level 1 and level 2 in English and Maths.
Entry Level Qualifications Level 1-3 are currently available in English, Maths and Science.
ASDAN/Award Of Personal Effectiveness (AoPE)
ASDAN offers programmes and qualifications that explicitly grow skills for learning, skills for employment and skills for life. Young people have the opportunity to achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold accreditation through the ASDAN Award. These are available in a variety of subjects including Food Technology, Art, Physical Education, Personal Social Health Economic Education, Environmental Studies, Geography and History.
The Award of Personal Effectiveness is a nationally recognised qualification, available at Levels 1, 2 and 3. It can accredit many of the imaginative and diverse activities undertaken by learners, both inside and outside of school. Assessment is based on a portfolio of evidence. The AoPE assessment units encourage the development of the skills required for progression to further education, training or employment.
Gateway/Duke of Edinburgh
For those young people who would find elements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award too challenging, we offer the Gateway Award (now part of Duke of Edinburgh programme) which is facilitated by Mencap.
Students are encouraged to work towards Bronze, Silver or Gold levels and provision is made for them to take part in their chosen activities during the school day.
There are five components for students to achieve, including: Hobbies, Leisure Activities, Sport and Fitness, Volunteering and planning a Gateway Challenge i.e. an activity or visit of their choice.
Gateway Qualifications– formerly the Open College Network
Gateway Qualifications is the new name for Open College Network Eastern Region, an Awarding Organisation with over 20 years of expertise in the credit-based learning field.
Gateway Qualifications empowers learners by providing learning experiences that inspire personal development. Our learning structures are tailored to the individual, their personality, skill set and ability, and enable them to fulfil their ambition.
Gateway offers opportunities for young people to achieve accreditation in a wide variety of subjects from Horticulture, Art and Design, and Construction. This ensures that the practical activities on offer also have a recognised qualification that accompanies them.
AQA Unit Awards
Some of our learners struggle to engage in a full education programme. To support these young people we use the Unit Award Scheme, a recognised way of recording achievement, rather than a qualification. It offers everyone the opportunity to have their achievements formally recognised - no matter what this is, how old they are, how long it takes or how small the learning step might be. Young people receive certificates for all units of work completed.
